PUBLIC TRANSPORT POST COVID
Public Transport during the Pandemic
The challenges
Alternatives of public transport
shared mobility
micro-mobility
Cycling
The onset of the pandemic has forced us to shift from the over-reliant and strained public transportation system towards the independent mode of transport. To prevent the spread of virus public transport is not operating at their full capacity. Certain restrictions have been imposed such as physical distancing among the commuters, wearing face masks, limited number of seating capacity is allowed.
For passengers traveling to distant places, it's mandatory to produce their health certificates. Quick temperature checks are also been taking place at the source and destination of the journey. Cabs and other smaller vehicles are also following a similar set of rules. Cabs are not allowed to board more than two to three passengers.
Due to the sudden change in the way people used to travel, we are facing many difficulties in our everyday life. As there are no standard operating procedures in place, there is a lot of ambiguity. We are facing hardships in finding alternatives to public transport.
Reverting to the individual mode of transport is not an option, as it will increase the traffic congestion, besides it will increase the pollution level of the cities. Increased pollution levels might cause collateral damage in the form of health hazards.
The following could be suitable alternatives
Shared Mobility
Companies like YULU, VOGO, BOUNCE, ZOOM CAR are already into shared mobility. The Government should incentivize and encourages these companies to come forward and build widespread infrastructure. Shared mobility could be game-changing steps in maintaining physical distancing.
Micro Mobility
When I say micro-mobility it means E sector, E sket, etc. Although these are legally not permissible in some countries due to regulatory constraints. These are useful for traveling to a small distance and handy for city ride. This mode of transportation is easy to adapt as a mobile app and an internet connection is the only prerequisite.
Cycles and E Cycles
Cycling has been projected as one of the best alternatives for public and private transport. Apart from solving the purpose of mobility, it's helpful in meeting the fitness goals and it is also an eco-friendly mode of transportation.
Many cities in the world already adopted cycling in their everyday life and they do have dedicated lanes for cycling. Time has come we should inculcate the habit of cycling and contribute to maintaining physical distancing.

Crowd management in public transport
-
To prevent further spread of the virus we have to make sure that the people traveling in trains, subways, and buses should be managed properly. We have to decrease the stress on the traditional mode of transportation by encouraging people to use the above-mentioned modes of transportation. Every day sanitation and disinfection of the vehicle and following the best practice of hygiene and sanitation will make things easier.
Infrastructure
In reality, our cities are not well equipped to promote the alternative mode of transportation. We need a wider sidewalk, pavements, and dedicated lanes for these kinds of commuters, The roads should be friendly for all modes of transportation.

Summary
The entire world is battling with the virus and we have to make some short term and long term changes in our life ro minimize its effects. There is no doubt that we have to find ways to tackle the adverse effect of the pandemic on public transport, at the same time we have to limit our transportation needs. We can start by cutting down all the frequent visits for shopping, and try to replace it by online means if possible. Companies are looking forward to encouraging the employee to work from home and these steps will be beneficial in decreasing the traffic in urban areas.
